When one cannot calm down, the entire body remains in a state of constant alert. Sleep is often short and shallow, daytime performance decreases, and even the smallest disturbances become bothersome. On one hand, you feel agitated, tense, and alarmed. On the other hand, this tension leads to little productive activity, becoming a sort of negative self-purpose.
This state is especially distressing, and the longer it lasts, the harder it is to end. Many affected individuals cannot break free from the cycle of useless alertness without help. So, what can be done?
Firstly, you should consciously recognize and accept your own imbalance. At some point, there was a reason for the development of this imbalance. The “inner alarm” is trying to give hints. It is sensible and important to find out why and what it is signalling.
A good remedy against inner restlessness is movement. When you expend energy, exert yourself, and get out of breath, frustrations dissipate more easily and you regain a sense of self-determination and control.
Occasionally, it helps to consciously do something nice for yourself. Listening to your favourite music, being entertained by something funny rather than thrilling on TV, or preparing your favourite meal can be beneficial.
Emotional balance and inner peace primarily rest on trust and the conviction that you have your life under control and can act autonomously. If you feel dependent, victimized, or helpless, inner restlessness spreads. To regain emotional stability and balance, you must leave the victim role. This can be achieved either through a fundamental change in attitude or by resolving the problems that caused the discomfort.
A crucial first step in this direction is the realistic assessment of personal goals and possibilities. If you constantly lag behind your own expectations and demands, you become more susceptible to criticism from yourself and others.
Personal and social problems should be addressed promptly and in a way that allows them to be resolved—finding your peace with them. Emotional burdens weigh heavily on the inner scale.
