Why Your Pain Keeps Coming Back (Even When Treatment ‘Works’)

Are you struggling with lower back pain? Have you tried different things to get lasting relief, but it keeps coming back? You are frustrated because you seem to go round in circles. And you just want to leave that discomfort behind and finally feel at ease again. Then the next part is for you.

Many of my clients follow the same pattern. They start with lower back pain that isn’t constant but keeps returning. So they begin looking for solutions to relieve it.
The Cycle That Keeps You Stuck
At first, they take pain relief so they can push through. When that doesn’t work, they see their GP and then other professionals.
And it is important to get it checked, as back pain can be a symptom of many underlying issues.
However, most of my clients are given the all clear. There is nothing wrong, at least not structurally. While this brings some relief, the pain remains. Questions about where it is coming from linger. They feel frustrated because all they want is to shift the pain. They want clarity about what is causing it and direction on how to finally find relief.
So they search for something new, or go back to things they have tried before, hoping it will work better this time. But relief, if there is any, doesn’t last. Frustration builds. Once again, hopes are high, but disappointment follows quickly. It leaves them feeling like something must be wrong with them.
Sometimes they even start to doubt that they will ever be pain free.

The Hidden Cost of Avoiding Pain
So they begin to make sacrifices. They shorten walks with their dogs to avoid flare-ups. They take easier routes to avoid hills. They skip their favourite exercise classes because they feel worse afterwards. They don’t want to, but they feel they have to so they don’t suffer more later. And this adds to their frustration. They are not only in pain, they are also missing out.
But life is too short for that. Imagine enjoying your life without holding back. What if your life was no longer dictated by lower back pain, and you could enjoy your walks instead of cutting them short? You start each day without that underlying frustration, no longer moving from one solution to the next.
For many of my clients, lower back pain is a symptom. Treating the symptom might ease discomfort for a while, but it doesn’t bring lasting relief. And that is what you are looking for. You want to finally shift the pain so you can move freely again, without constantly checking in with your body. You want to go about your day without wondering how your back will feel. You deserve to feel at ease when exercising, walking your dog, or simply watching your child’s football game.
Let’s be honest, your lower back pain has a cause. What you are feeling is real and valid. Once you understand that cause, you can address it at the root. That is when you can find the right solution, and the symptom begins to fade.
The Real Reason Your Pain Keeps Returning
While many of my clients come to me because of lower back pain, they don’t all have the same cause. What they do have in common is a habitual pattern: chronic muscle tension.
When I mention this, most people say, “Oh yeah, my shoulders are always tense.” And that’s it. For many, it starts in the shoulders. Almost always.
Our bodies are very good at adapting and creating patterns over time. If your weak point is your lower back, tension from your shoulders can show up there. This is why focusing only on the pain hasn’t worked.
Think about it for a moment. If the tension starts in your shoulders, but you focus on your lower back because that’s where the pain is, what happens? Do you think the pain will shift? No. Because the tension in your shoulders is still there.

To find lasting relief, you need to understand what caused the pain in the first place. If you don’t, it will keep coming back.
Would you like to take the first step to change this?
Start by reflecting on your lower back pain, especially if you have tried different things but haven’t found lasting relief. When you begin to look beyond the lower back, other patterns often start to appear.
To help you with this, I’ve created a simple 5-minute check so you can see if you’ve been focusing on the wrong thing. It will show you whether you’ve been chasing symptom relief rather than the root cause. And it will help you stop going in circles and start to understand why nothing has worked so far.
